For a guy, puberty can be confusing. Girls don’t make it any easier. There are so many choices and questions. Is it better to be a star athlete or a rockn’roll star? Does there have to be a difference?…Why does it matter so much?
I had begun to struggle as a star athlete. The competition (for the girls too) was getting more difficult. Even so, I still thought I had a shot and continued athletically, but I had learned how to play the saxophone well enough to produce a sound called The Hollywood Buzz, so popular and desired by the rockn’roll bands of that era, and the marching band at Springfield High had little use for sax solos. With so much at stake, what was a guy to do?
I joined a rockn’roll band. Tony was a really good drummer and a fellow Cougar as well. Tony had connections and along with George and Terry, we were TheIdeals. We lied to the musicians’ union about our ages, hooked up with a booking agent, lied to our parents, and started playing gigs at night clubs in Philly. During that time, we appeared at several school dances too. The teachers were impressed (and a bit mystified) by our polish. The chicks, as we began to call them, noticed The Hollywood Buzz.
Things seemed to be working out OK. I even wore my band outfit for my class picture. ‘Always good to have a picture ready to autograph for the chicks’)) lol))…
Meanwhile, there were still some notable athletic moments too. I could hear the Cougar chicks whispering among themselves, “He’s the one who does The Hollywood Buzz!”
